Why I Chose Design

Throughout my life, I never knew where I would fit in.

I began in the arts in high school, starting with things like theatre and dance, but it did not feel like what I would be doing for the rest of my life. Throughout the remainder of high school, I started getting more into fashion and thought, “Maybe fashion design should be my major in college when I graduate.”

Shortly after graduating high school, I enrolled in college to obtain my Associate’s degree in Fashion Design. I will tell you one thing about fashion school, it broke me. I went through mental breakdowns many days in class, as well as many late nights getting my work done as much as possible. Near the end of my two-year degree, my class had our final fashion show and my pieces were not executed how I had imagined. Afterwards, I went back to the drawing board and realized my digital designs were much better than my physical pieces. I wondered why because I thought fashion design was my calling, but I took a step back and did more research on other creative degrees I could pursue and found graphic design.

After graduating with my Fashion degree, I took two years off from school still trying to figure out if going back to school was my best bet. I have yet to receive any job opportunities with my degree and so I continued to think about what my next chapter would be.

While on my hiatus from college, I began working with a local musical artist in my area creating graphic work for their albums and singles. This connection is what sparked my calling of becoming a graphic designer. I began teaching myself the ins and outs of Adobe’s programs and more! I began with creating artwork and logos and ended with being able to create full social media content pushes, album projects, photography, and even music videos. As time passed, we continued working together and I kept growing as a designer.

Soon after, I enrolled to obtain my Associate’s degree in Graphic Design. Throughout my two more years in college, I continued working with the local artist and revamping their entire social media, video, and artwork catalogue.

Since graduation, I re-enrolled another two years to gain my Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. Boy, has it been a ride! I continue to work daily, creating content nearly 24/7, and I love every minute of it!

While currently in college, I still work with the same artist now (who is now my other half), and I now have a full-time job as a content creator in Charlotte, NC. I have grown so much as a designer and content creator since 2015, and I still have a long ride ahead of me! Graphic design is what gets me out of bed in the morning (and also what makes me lose sleep also) and I wouldn’t change anything about my workload because I love every minute of it!

So, come and join me on this journey as continue to venture off into the wild world of graphic design! :D
